COTD - 26th June 2011 - Dunsparce UL

My pick for today is the rather unusual Dunspace from HS: Unleashed. This card features an average 60HP for a Basic, is of Colourless typing and has just one attack.
Its attack is called 'Return' and costs just a single Colourless Energy. This attack does 10 damage and simple allows you to draw cards up until you have 6 cards in hand. This for me puts Dunsparce into the 'Starter' category and is actually a pretty decent one. At the moment, Baby Pokemon are the choice for starting off the game with the most popular ones being Tyrogue and Cleffa since they have attacks the refresh the hand and do pretty nice damage.
The downside to these Pokemon is that they have really low HP, 30 to be exact and though the Poke Body can be useful, it just can get annoying when you're having one of those days where you roll tails 4 times in a row.
Back to Dunsparce and this card features a much better 60HP than the babies and can't get donked by Tyrogue despite the Fighting Weakness. The attack is actually really useful. I tried it for a while in my decks before I started using Cleffa and it really is a nice way to start the game. If you start with Cleffa and a decent hand that you don't want to 'Eeeeek' away, odds are it will get KO'd and your opponent will know you have a decent hand. Dunsparce allows you to keep these useful cards along with drawing more and tacking 10 damage onto the opposing Pokemon, which can come in really handy!
The only downside to Dunsparce compared to other starters is that its attack costs energy and it has a single retreat cost. This means that if you can't draw into the energy quick enough or you don't run many energy, Dunsparce will get stuck in the active spot when you don't want it to. This can also become frustrating at the start of the game when you're ready to start tearing up your opponent.
Overall, this is a starter that you definitely should try out. It has very nice stats and a good attack which can get you a head start in the game, drawing those crucial extra cards. I'm going to give Dunsparce a solid 6.5/10. This little guy can get you off to nice starts, but the retreat cost can serve an issue compared to the Baby alternatives.

Thanks for reading and make sure you check out my latest episode out today at the top of the page. Check back tomorrow for the next card!

I think he can be a pretty decent starter given the right deck. A deck running on mainly trainers that can get rid of their hands really early on might be able to use him. I'm going to at least give him a shot in a couple of my decks.
