COTD - 25th June 2011 - Energy Search BW

First off, let me just apologise for no COTD yesterday. Things have been pretty busy at the moment with my videos and, on that subject, the next episode of PokeClass will be out on Sunday (tomorrow) rather than today for the same reason. So enough of that and onto our card for today which is Energy Search from Black and White.
This card is as simple as its title. This trainer card allows you to search your deck for a basic energy card and the place it into your hand, very simple yet sometimes very effective.
I personally haven't found big enough reason to slip this into my builds yet, but I have seen a few people doing so if their deck runs multiple kinds of energy.
Decks such as MagneBoar, Kingdra/Mandibuzz and toolbox decks will run 2 or maybe 3 different kinds of energy to power up their attackers. This would be where Energy Search could be a good thing. However, decks like MagneBoar have built in draw already so it appears to be much easier to just add extra energy in the space where Energy Search would be and draw it normally. In decks that don't have the incredible draw power of Magnezone, it shouldn't really be played more than twice in a list. If you are fitting in 3 or 4 of these in the list, then you might as well just replace them for energy and let your deck do its job naturally.
That being said, Energy Search is still viable in small numbers if you're finding it hard to get energy, or want to run a thinner energy line. In a deck such as Kingdra/Mandibuzz, both attackers have a single energy cost, making the energy line sparse enough to warrant the inclusion of Energy Search. But in other decks, I'm not sure that it would be as useful.
So overall, I'm going to give Energy Search a rather harsh 4/10. Yes, it can get you energy at crucial times, but if you really are that desperate for energy, then maybe just bump up your energy count instead. As I mentioned, it does have its uses, but not enough to warrant a nice score.

Thanks a lot for reading and make sure you check my YouTube channel and this site tomorrow for the latest episode of PokeClass!
